Janice (Wood) Niswonger's remarks at
Janet Dawson Hoag's Memorial Service

We are never quite prepared to lose loved ones, and Jann’s death came as a real surprise to me. I had just visited her in the hospital on Monday and she was doing fine and ready to go home the next day. When Ken called on Thursday and said he lost Jann, death didn’t even register with me. My first thought and comment was where did you lose her? I thought perhaps she became disoriented and got lost. If I had been thinking clearly, I would have known that it would be real hard to get lost in Wamego. I have been reminded often since then of a Bible verse where God tells us, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.” After Ken asked me if I wanted to speak at her service, I thought about what I would say. No specific event stuck out other than to give a characteristic using each letter of her name. Jann was:

I believe Jann also embodied the fruits of the spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Well, okay, maybe she lacked a little self-control when it came to eating ice cream, especially chocolate.

As I have wept over the loss of my dear friend, I am reminded that Jesus also wept over the loss of his friend, Lazarus, but I rejoice in the fact that she is with Jesus and suffering no more pain.

As Father Curtis stated last week at her memorial serviced in Wamego, Jann was an experience. Indeed she was and one I will always be glad I had.

So, Jann, meet me at the gate!
